Driving Under the Influence

Impaired driving continues to be a major world health problem. In the U.S., where it accounts for an annual loss of 13,000 lives and a societal loss of $130 Billion, it has been a particularly frustrating issue because, following a steep decline in the percent of all fatal crashes that were alcohol related between 1982 and 1997, little progress has been made. The search for a better understanding of the problem and more effective countermeasures has continued and is reflected in this compilation of recent articles on the topic published in Addiction which illustrate the current trends in impaired driving research; the increased attention to the problem in developing nations, the rapid growth of new technological methods for monitoring alcohol use such as interlocks and biomarkers and the emergence of drugged driving as an important research and policy issue. These trends are leading to the reexamination of drink-driving laws and sanction programs in Europe and the United States.
