Prescription Drug Misuse

Traditionally, clinical concern regarding drugs such as the opioids and psychostimulants has focused on illicit substances. Thus, there is a wealth of information on heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. More recently, however, there has been growing concern about the abuse of prescribed pharmaceuticals. The abuse of benzodiazepines has long been documented. Other prescribed drugs are now joining the list of substances causing serious clinical alarm. Oxycontin is of particular interest, as there have been substantial increases in sales, and deaths attributed to the drug. Importantly, these deaths range beyond the “usual suspects” of established illicit drug users. Similarly, there is rising concern about the abuse of stimulant medications prescribed for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. As a leading international journal in the field, Addiction has published seminal papers on these new trends. In this virtual themed issue on Prescription Drug Misuse, we have collated 23 recent papers published in Addiction on this important topic, which will be of use to researchers, clinicians and policy makers.
