Clinical Endocrinology Virtual Issues

The Society for Endocrinology adopted Clinical Endocrinology as its official clinical journal in 1995 and this has resulted in many benefits, including support for the annual SFE-BES meeting and for clinical endocrine audit projects, through the Clinical Endocrinology Trust.

The initial focus of the Journal was to establish itself as a major international journal in the broad discipline of clinical endocrinology; the substantial and continuing improvement of Impact Factor is recognition of the achievement of this aim and the perceived value of Clinical Endocrinology to members of the Society and to clinical scientists all over the world.

For every clinical scientist who cites articles published in the Journal, there are many times the number of clinicians who regularly read the Journal, seeking to update their knowledge and to apply findings in the Journal to their everyday practice. With this in mind, in 2010, the senior editors determined to introduce a segment which directly addressed important clinical questions. Bill Young undertook to oversee this new initiative and has been responsible for attracting a range of experts from all over the world to provide their opinion on some important day to day issues of consequence to all practising clinicians. Many of the Clinical Questions address topics where the evidence-base is limited hence their content relies heavily on the clinical experience of the author.

The Editors soon became aware of feedback from international readers and from SFE members that these articles were extremely popular with established clinicians, as well as Fellows in training. They have become the focus of Journal Clubs and training sessions, and an important resource for examination preparation. As a result of this, the Senior Editors, with the willing support of our publishers at Wiley-Blackwell, decided to publish the first set of Clinical Questions as a separate virtual issue, with Open Access for all.

We hope the bringing together of these articles and their organization according to endocrine subject area will provide clinical readers with this valuable resource in an easy, accessible format. The Editors and the SFE would welcome further feedback and suggestions for continued improvement of the Journal for all our readers.
