Parents' and children's knowledge of oral health: a qualitative study of children with cleft palate

Karen Davies, Yin-Ling Lin and Peter Callery

The Editor's choice in this issue is from a team in the UK, one of two papers looking at oral health issues in children with cleft lip and/or palate. The other paper, from Sweden, considers reported quality of life in these children.

I chose the paper looking at the children with cleft lip and/or palate and their carers' oral health knowledge as there is a clear need to understand and improve the oral health of this group of children. They have a well documented increased caries risk compared to the general population along with a significant burden of surgical and medical interventions. Such interventions can be compromised by poor oral health resulting, ultimately, in poor outcomes.

What became obvious as I read the article is that, particularly with regard to the children, their reported knowledge and motivators to brush, for example, are perhaps not unsurprisingly very similar to that reported for the general population.

There is I feel evidence that carer's were aware of relevant issues and show more knowledge than the general population possibly as a result of ‘teachable moments’.

It is my belief that this study informs our care of not only this specific group but the entire paediatric population.
