VI: Older People and Quality of Life

Edited by Carmen de la Cuesta Benjumea and Brenda Roe

July 2013

The World Health Organization strategy of “adding life to years” highlighted the importance of older people and their quality of life, an issue of relevance to nursing since the last century. The key papers from JAN selected for this virtual issue, span a period of the last 13 years highlighting the sustained interest of the topic. They have a common aim, to orient nurses to promote, maintain and improve older people’s quality of life. For this, some papers contribute to a better understanding of the term and its different facets or parameters; others identify and describe factors present in older people’s quality of life enabling targeted actions. Lastly, while a group of papers broaden the scope of quality of life by including old persons’ caregivers, others deepened its meaning by singling out issues entangled in experiencing a life of quality.
