Watch now: The Gut Microbiota in Health and Disease: Potential for Probiotics and Prebiotics

Koen Venema, Beneficial Microbes® Consultancy and Maastricht University, The Netherlands, presented the 2017 Journal of Applied Microbiology Lecture at the SfAM Annual Conference in Gateshead, UK.

In recent years it has become clear that the gut microbiota is important in health and disease. In all diseases and disorders the gut microbiota plays a role, due to its interaction with the host. Over the past two decades Koen Venema and colleagues have contributed to the study of gut microbiology using predictive, sophisticated, dynamic in vitro models of the GI tract. Recent examples of the applied use of these in vitro models are shown during the lecture.
