Virtual Issue on Probiotics


The Journal of Applied Microbiology publishes full length papers on virtually all aspects of applied microbiology. Within this broad remit, the area of probiotics has been prominent over the past decade. Probiotics are an important means to improve (human) health, and this virtual issue represents typical papers published in the area over approximately the past two years. We examined the full list of papers published in JAM in the past 24 months in the area of bacterial probiotics (no yeast papers included) and applications in humans only, and selected eleven papers for inclusion in this Virtual Special Issue.

The first two of the included papers deal with production of vitamins by potential probiotics. Types and amount of vitamin production varies considerably between probiotic strains, where some of the used strains even consume vitamins rather than produce them. The next seven papers deal with potential mechanisms of action of probiotics. This ranges from in vitro studies (4 papers) such as the use of mouse dendritic cells or human gut epithelial cells and work with animal models (2 papers), to a well-designed clinical trial in humans. The last two papers included in this virtual issue deal with detection of a specific probiotic in faecal material (although in this paper the probiotic was spiked, not orally fed), and a practical study on the combined use of probiotics and antibiotics.
