Virtual Issue - The phenomenon of resistance to fungicides

May 2012

This virtual issue of PLANT PATHOLOGY brings together recent and ‘on-line early’ reviews and articles that have been published in the Journal on the resistance of various species of fungi and oomycetes to chemical control measures. Such chemicals are an important crop protection measure, and there are well-researched and published strategies to maximise their effectiveness for control of a broad range of diseases. However, fungal and oomycete plant pathogens often have rapidly evolving genomes and are able to adapt to selection pressures placed upon them, such that the fungicides can lose their effectiveness over time.

In the collection of articles that make up this ‘virtual issue’ are two reviews that outline the debate surrounding the development of fungicide resistance in populations of plant pathogens as well as modelling of the risk. There are then 17 original papers that examine specific examples of fungicide resistance worldwide, which together provide evidence of the problems that occur. It is through understanding these problems, and further research building on these published studies, that improved strategies for managing the fungicide resistance phenomenon will continue to be developed and applied.
