Virtual Issue - XXIV International Congress of Entomology - May 2012

Systematics papers from Asia-based researchers

Introduction

The preparation of this virtual issue of Systematic Entomology is timed to coincide with the XXIV International Congress of Entomology in Daegu, Korea in August 2012. In the past decade the number and quality of manuscripts submitted from this region has increased steadily such that they now comprise a good proportion of papers published each year. Topics cover the complete spectrum including molecular approaches to regional and international taxonomic and evolutionary problems, and morphological, descriptive and phylogenetic studies including for critical fossil taxa. Although many publishing scientists in the region received their training overseas, increasingly locally trained systematists are meeting our reviewers’ approval for their studies. Two members of the editorial board of Systematic Entomology are located in Asia: Kazunori Yoshizawa and his students research in insect systematics at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, and Rudolf Meier leads his research group in the National University of Singapore. Both scientists have raised the profile and quality of the discipline of systematic entomology in the region. In this virtual issue we highlight the strength and diversity of selected papers we have published that emanated from a first author located in Asia.
