Author Guidelines


Effective with the 2011 volume, Andrologia will be published in an online-only format. No printed edition will be published. Your article will therefore appear online-only. All normal author benefits and services remain in place e.g. authors will continue to be able to order print reprints of articles if required. Furthermore, there will no cost to authors for the publication of colour images in the online-only edition. Please see the author instructions for full details.

1. General

Andrologia publishes original scientific research work from the whole field of andrology. Manuscripts should be written in English (following the Concise Oxford Dictionary and The Oxford Dictionary for Writers and Editors). Authors should aim for a concise readable style. Letters to the editors and brief communications will be accepted.

2. Manuscript submission

Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/and. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Copyright Transfer Agreement
If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

For authors signing the copyright transfer agreement
If the OnlineOpen option is not selected the corresponding author will be presented with the copyright transfer agreement (CTA) to sign. The terms and conditions of the CTA can be previewed in the samples associated with the Copyright FAQs.

2.1 Format

Manuscripts must be typed on A4 (210 × 297 mm) paper, double-spaced throughout and with ample margins of at least 3.5 cm. All pages must be numbered consecutively. Starting with the title page as p.1, the text, which begins with p.2, is to be arranged in the following order: summary, brief introduction, material and methods (or patients/subjects and methods if human patients/subjects were involved), results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, figure legends, tables.

The title page must provide the title in English, name(s) of author(s), departmental and institutional affiliation, a short title of not more than 45 characters (including spaces) to be used as running head, up to five topical key words in English for subject indexing, the full postal address of the corresponding author to whom proofs will be sent. The title should be brief and should indicate the species studied. Subtitles are not encouraged.

The summary should not exceed 200 words, should be one paragraph and should be free of references and abbreviations. It should indicate clearly the scope and main conclusions of the paper.

The introduction should give the pertinent background to the study and should explain why the work was done.

The material and methods should give essential details, including experimental design and statistical analysis.

The results should present the findings of the research. They should be free from discussion. Results should be written in the past tense.

The discussion should cover, but not simply repeat the new findings and should present the author's results in broader context of other work on the subject interpreting them with a minimum of speculation.
The acknowledgements should be as brief as possible. 

2.2 Length

Including illustrations, tables, and references, manuscripts should not exceed 15 pages of DIN A4. Brief communications, including title, summary and references must not exceed 1000 words plus one figure or table. The number and size of figures and tables should be limited to the essential minimum. 

2.3 Units, abbreviations and nomenclature

The SI (Système International) units should be used. Doses of drugs should be given as unit weight per body weight, e.g. mmol kg-1. Rates should be expressed with negative indices. Concentrations should be given in terms of molarity, e.g. mmol 1-1, not a mM.

For semen analysis authors should use the following nomenclature: spermia = referring to semen volume; aspermia = no semen; hypospermia = volume less than 2 ml*; zoospermia = referring to spermatozoa in semen; oligozoospermia = less than 20 million spermatozoa per ml*; asthenozoospermia = decreased motility of spermatozoa* (less than 50% motile spermatozoa [WHO categories 'a' and 'b'] or less than 25% spermatozoa of WHO category 'a'); teratozoospermia = more than 70% abnormal spermatozoa* (*Even though these terms can be used, they should whenever possible be replaced with precise information about volume, sperm density etc.) 

2.4 Illustrations and tables

Figures should be saved in a neutral data format such as JPEG, TIFF or EPS. Powerpoint and Word graphics are unsuitable for reproduction. Please do not use any pixel-oriented programmes. Scanned figures (in JPEG and TIFF formats) should have a resolution of 300 dpi (halftone) or 600 to 1200 dpi (line drawings) in relation to the reproduction size. Please note that figures will generally be reduced to fit within the printed column (80 mm wide) or the width of the entire page (170 mm). The maximum possible length of the layout is 240 mm. Numbering and lettering must still be readable when reduced (e.g. maps), and the scale might not correspond with the original (microscopic pictures), thereby invalidating references to scale in the text. If a figure is to be cropped, please mark the lines on a photocopy or tracing paper. Printouts should be made with a laser printer at the highest resolution (¡Ý600 dpi).

Captions for the figures should give a precise description of the content and should not be repeated within the figure. Inscriptions should be uniform, about 3 mm high, and must be professionally prepared. Letraset (or equivalent instant lettering) is recommended for lettering micrographs, including figure numbers.

Tables should be created using the table function. Each table should carry an appropriate legend and should be presented in a way that makes the table self-explanatory.
Numerical results should be expressed as means with the relevant standard errors and/or statistically significant differences, quoting probability levels (P-values). 

2.5 References

APA – American Psychological Association

References: List all sources in the reference list alphabetically by name. . In text citations should follow the author-date method. This means that the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998), and a complete reference should appear in the reference list at the end of the paper.

References are styled according to the sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. A sample of the most common entries in reference lists appears below. Please note that for journal articles, issue numbers are not included unless each issue in the volume begins with page one.

Journal article: Phelps, L. (1996). Discriminative validity of the WRAML with ADHD and LD children. Psychology in the Schools, 33, 5-12.

Book edition: Bradley-Johnson, S. (1994). Psychoeducational assessment of students who are visually impaired or blind: Infancy through high school (2nd ed.). Austin, TX: Pro-ed.

References should refer only to material listed within the text.

3. Proofs

The corresponding author will receive an email alert containing a link to a website. A working email address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. The proof can be downloaded as a PDF (portable document format) file from this site. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following website: www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available.

5. Author material archive policy

Please note that unless specifically requested, Wiley-Blackwell Publishing will dispose of all hardcopy or electronic material submitted two months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the editorial office or production editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.

6. Author services

7. OnlineOpen

OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen, the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website at: https://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/onlineopen_order.asp. Prior to acceptance there is no requirement to inform an Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.

8. Early View

Andrologia is now available via the Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. They are given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked. After publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
