Introduction: Welcome to this virtual issue of Nephrology. This issue contains articles previously published in this journal under the title of Methods in Renal Research. These articles provide a practical, step-by-step, teaching guide on how to perform various techniques which are commonly used in renal research, but that are often not described in detail in publications. These articles cover techniques used in animal based research (diabetic nephropathy, renal ischaemia/reperfusion injury and renal artery injection), isolation and culture of human proximal tubular epithelial cells, detection of apoptotic cells, and image analysis of renal pathology. There has been a very positive response to these articles, and we hope to reach a wider audience by making these articles freely available online.
