Roger Kitching has been a central figure in Australian ecology since his arrival in 1977. He was the editor of the Australian Journal of Ecology (now Austral Ecology) from 1979 – 1981, and he has himself contributed over 220 peer reviewed papers with a focus on insect diversity in tropical ecosystems. This issue of Austral Ecology contains a series of papers by his close colleagues that reflect his research interests in patterns of insect diversity, including his key partnership in the international IBISCA (Investigating Biodiversity of Soil and Canopy Arthropods) program.
