Renowned vision scientist Gerald Westheimer FRS published his first papers in Australian Journal of Optometry, the former title of Clinical and Experimental Optometry.
Westheimer trained as an optometrist at the Sydney Technical College, qualifying in 1943 at the age of 19 years. He continued his studies to complete a BSc degree at the University of Sydney in 1948 while practising as an optometrist. His first paper was published in Australian Journal of Optometry in 1945. He wrote a further 11 papers for the journal, some while he was studying for his PhD at Ohio State University and others while holding his first academic posts at Houston and California.
These early papers are now accessible in full text on the internet site for Clinical and Experimental Optometry. He was the 2009 recipient of the HB Collin Research Medal awarded by Optometrists Association Australia.
