Virtual Issue: Fatigue and Fracture of Welded Joints

In engineering structures under fatigue loading, welded joints are frequently the most critical parts: the “Achilles’ heel”. Among different joint types or techniques, due to their nature, welded joints present several technical issues and goals for scientists and technologists. FFEMS has always been an up-to-date monitor of current research and investigation on fracture and fatigue behaviour of welded joints and we are proud to publish a “Virtual Issue” to give an overview of the diverse subjects involved in the whole area of welded joint research, ranging from stress analysis, to mechanics of materials; experimental mechanics and correlation of mechanical behaviour, to process parameters.
Some of the selected papers are key works for the structural investigation of welded joints and are highly cited contributions on the topic; other papers are selected to supply a wide overview of possible issues to be addressed. In addition, the aim of the selection has been to outline research activity over the last fifteen years, paying particular attention to the most recent contributions avoiding duplicates on similar topics; hence several noteworthy papers, of comparable quality and relevance, have not been selected simply because of the limited number of selectable papers.
