Overview

Environmental Microbiology is devoted to the advancement of our understanding of microbial interactions and microbial processes in the environment, and publishes original research reporting significant advances in or relating to this subject.

Brief Reports, documenting a single important finding, are published in our sister journal Environmental Microbiology Reports

Insight into peer-review
The December 2010 issue features Referees' quotes - 2010 from Environmental Microbiology, offering an insight into the highs and lows of peer-review. Some of these quotes were highlighted on BBC Radio 4's Today Programme on Thursday 16 December 2010: The scientific sense of humour.

Aims and Scope

Environmental Microbiology provides a high profile vehicle for publication of the most innovative, original and rigorous research in the field. The scope of the Journal encompasses the diversity of current research on microbial processes in the environment, microbial communities and microbial interactions, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • the structure, activities and communal behaviour of microbial communities
  • microbial interactions and interactions with plants, animals and non-living environmental factors
  • population biology and clonal structure
  • microbes and surfaces
  • adhesion and biofouling
  • responses to environmental signals and stress factors
  • growth and survival
  • modelling and theory development
  • microbial community genetics and evolutionary processes
  • microbial physiological, metabolic and structural diversity
  • pollution microbiology
  • extremophiles and life in extreme and unusual little-explored habitats
  • primary and secondary production
  • element cycles and biogeochemical processes
  • microbially-influenced global changes
  • new technological developments in microbial ecology, in particular for the study of activities of microbial communities and of non-culturable microorganisms Interdisciplinary studies of fundamental problems are particularly welcome.
