Founded in 1921, the Institute of Historical Research is the national centre for advanced historical study in the UK. It is also the most important meeting place for historians in the UK, it boasts an outstanding library of international renown, and it produces many valuable research aids and tools. The Institute houses three research centres of international distinction: the Victoria County History, the Centre for Metropolitan History and the Institute for Contemporary British History. It plays host to the most varied and distinguished range of history seminars to be found in one place anywhere in the English-speaking world; and its training courses and publications (on paper and on the Internet) are widely recognised as being of immense value to historians of all ages and interests.
