Author Guidelines

All submitted papers will be assessed initially by the Editor and the Editorial Board for compatibility with the journal's focus on migration policy. Only papers relevant to current migration policy debates and concerns will be forwarded for double-blind peer review. International Migration considers research articles to be useful to policy if they draw attention to phenomena that will give rise to unwanted effects if ignored by policy officials or that policy can influence for the betterment of migrant receiving countries, homelands, and the migrants themselves. We ask authors to think about what governments, international organizations, and civil society need to know and understand to do their jobs effectively and to produce widespread benefits. We therefore ask authors to spend time in their submissions explaining explicitly the connections that they perceive between their empirical work and the responsibilities that policy officials bear. International Migration reserves the right to first publication of all manuscripts submitted to its Editor. Manuscripts should not be submitted simultaneously to another journal (or journals) for publication. Submission of a manuscript is taken to indicate the author’s commitment to publish in International Migration.

Preparation of Copy
Manuscripts should not exceed 8000 words (including abstract, policy implications, references plus 2-3 tables or graphs if needed). International Migration accepts only electronic submissions using ScholarOne Manuscripts. To submit a manuscript, please follow the instructions below.

Getting Started
1. Launch your web browser (supported browsers include Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher, Firefox 1.0.4 or higher or Safari 1.2.4) and go to the International Migration ScholarOne Manuscripts homepage
2. Log-in or click the 'Create Account' option if you are a first-time user of ScholarOne Manuscripts.
3. If you are creating a new account:

- After clicking on 'Create Account', enter your name and e-mail information and click 'Next'. Your e-mail information is very important.
- Enter your institution and address information as appropriate, and then click 'Next'.
- Enter a user ID and password of your choice (we recommend using your e-mail address as your user ID), and then select your area of expertise. Click 'Finish'.

4. If you have an account but have forgotten your log-in details, go to 'Password Help' on the International Migration ScholarOne Manuscripts homepage and enter your e-mail address. The system will send you details on how to log in.
5. Log-in and select 'Author Centre'.

Submitting Your Manuscript
6. After you have logged in, click the 'Submit a Manuscript' link in the menu bar, or 'Submit an EndNote Manuscript' (if this is available on the site and you have used an EndNote formatting template to create your manuscript in Microsoft Word).
7. Enter data and answer questions as appropriate.
8. Click the 'Next' button on each screen to save your work and advance to the next screen.
9. You are required to upload your files.

- Click on the 'Browse' button and locate the file on your computer.
- Select the designation of each file in the drop down next to the 'Browse' button.
- When you have selected all the files you wish to upload, click the 'Upload Files' button.

10. Review your submission (in both PDF and HTML formats) before sending to the Journal. Click the 'Submit' button when you are finished reviewing.

You may suspend a submission at any phase before clicking the 'Submit' button and save it to submit later. After submission, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You can also access ScholarOne Manuscripts any time to check the status of your manuscript. The Journal will inform you by e-mail once a decision has been made.

Title Page
- The review process at International Migration is double blind to ensure an impartial evaluation. Thus, the author’s name and any identifying information should appear only on the title page of the manuscript. Do not include any identifying information in the abstract or manuscript.
- The title page should contain the title of the manuscript and the names and institutional affiliations for all authors as they want them printed in the published journal. The complete address, phone number, and email address of the corresponding author should also be included.

Article Title
- The title of the article must not be longer than 70 characters (including spaces). If the title is longer than 70 characters, we cannot guarantee that the entire title will be included on the cover. Please do not include the author(s) name in the filename.

- An Abstract of 150 words is required. It should summarize the main findings of the paper. If you are submitting a piece for the Commentary or Data and Perspectives sections, an abstract is not required.

International Migration uses British English. The journal follows the Oxford English Dictionary.
- It is essential that all submissions conform to acceptable standards of English style and usage.
- All pages must have consecutive page numbering. Do not use other headers or footers.
- All references to monographs, articles, and other sources should be inserted at the appropriate place in the text, preferably at the end of a sentence.
- Headings should be clearly displayed. Do not underline or use bold lettering. Main headings should be centred on the page in capital letters; subheads should be centred with only the first letter of the first word capitalized. If a third-level heading is required, it should be flush left with only the first letter of the first word capitalized.
- A recurring acronym/abbreviation should be written in full the first time it is used in the text, followed by the relevant acronym in parentheses (e.g. World Health Organization (WHO)). Thereafter, it is sufficient to use only the acronym/abbreviation.
- Double quotation marks “-” should be used for all quotations, except quotations within quotations, which are presented in single inverted commas. Ex. “When I said ‘immediately’, I meant before the end of the week,” explained the spokesperson. If a quotation is longer than five lines it may appear as a single indented block, without quotation marks. It is unnecessary to italicize a quotation.

- Notes in the text should be numbered seriatim and be confined to points of explanation or information deemed inappropriate for inclusion in the main text. A list of Notes should appear at the end of the main text and not on pages within the text. Notes are generally discouraged and should be kept to a minimum. Never use notes to cite materials.

- For multiple authorship, provide all names. For institutional authorship, provide minimum identification.
- If there are several references to the same author and year, they should be distinguished by the letters a, b, c, etc., as in 2000a, 2000b, 2000c in both the text and the list of references at the end of the text.
- All references listed in the reference section at the end of the manuscript must be cited in the text, and all references listed in the text must be included in the reference section. For citations for more than two authors, use “et al.” after the first author’s last name.
- The reference list should be headed References. All items should be listed alphabetically by author and by year of publication. Use italics for titles of books and journals. Example follows:

Table and Figures
- Tables and Figures should be submitted at the end of the text with each Table and Figure on a separate page.
- Tables and Figures should be kept to a minimum.
- Tables should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited. Each Table must be cited in the text. Insert a line indicating where the Table or Figure should be placed in the text. In layout, tables are placed as close as possible to their first citation in the text.
- Each Table and Figure should have a self-contained title.
- Tables and Figures should be provided in Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word format, in addition to a clear laser copy. If this is impossible, the Editor should be consulted.


- Proofs are supplied to the lead author solely for the correction of misprints; material should never be added or removed at this stage. Any corrections must be returned within 3 days.

Early View
International Migration is covered by Wiley Blackwell’s Early View service. Early View articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. Articles are therefore available as soon as they are ready, rather than having to wait for the next scheduled print issue. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of Early View articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so Early View articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.

Pre-submission English-language editing
Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscript professionally edited before submission to improve the English. A list of independent suppliers of editing services can be found at All services are paid for and arranged by the author, and use of one of these services does not guarantee acceptance or preference for publication.

Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS)
If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

For authors signing the Exclusive Licence Form
If the OnlineOpen option is not selected the corresponding author will be presented with the Exclusive Licence Form to sign.
