The background image of the Neuroscience issue covers was scanned from the 1885 edition of Lessons in Elementary Physiology by T. H. Huxley (embellished around the sides with images of neurones previously published in The Journal). Huxley was a close friend of the founder and original editor of The Journal of Physiology, Michael Foster, who saw the work through the press while Huxley was regaining his health in Rome.

Introduction

It is now a little over a year since The Journal of Physiology began to publish its Neuroscience articles as dedicated issues. From 1 September 2011 onwards, every third issue has been Neuroscience only, and the 1 October 2012 issue is the tenth. To mark the occasion we are publishing here the three Editor’s Choice papers that were featured on The Journal’s home page for each of these 10 issues.

As well as research papers, our Neuroscience issues contain a mix of commentaries (Perspectives, Journal Club) and review articles (Topical Reviews, Symposium Reviews, Lectures – totalling 33 in the last 10 issues). In the last year we published five symposia: Molecular mechanisms underlying neurovascular protection in stroke; Human hand function; Ligand-gated ion channels; Cortical inhibitory neuron ‘basket cells’; and Synaptic mechanisms in the CNS.

The Journal has sponsored satellite symposia at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) since 1999. Our most recent one was Cortical inhibitory neuron ‘basket cells’: from circuit function to disruption, held at the SfN annual meeting in Washington, DC on 11 November 1911 and published in the 15 February 2012 issue. This year The Journal of Physiology Symposium at the 2012 SfN meeting in New Orleans is Size matters: formation and function of GIANT synapses, on Friday 12 October, with Symposium Reviews to be published early in 2013.
