1. Remit of Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers
Transactions publishes the very best scholarship from around the world and across the whole spectrum of geographical research. It publishes ‘landmark’ articles that make a substantial theoretical, conceptual or empirical contribution to the advancement of geographical understanding. Transactions papers should stimulate and shape research agendas in human or physical geography and/or showcase the contribution of geographical research to advancing knowledge within and beyond the discipline.
Most papers will be sent to at least three referees; the review process is double blind. Reviewers for Transactions are asked to evaluate the extent to which papers make a substantial contribution to advancing geographical understanding and whether they will be remembered, and referred to, by geographers and others working in related fields. Please note that some papers will be rejected at the pre-screening stage if they do not meet the criteria for publication in Transactions.
2. Paper Types
Transactions publishes regular papers and commentaries.
Regular papers: The maximum target length of regular papers is 8000 to 10 000 words, including references, endnotes, tables, figures and other text. Tables and figures should normally be considered equivalent to 250 words. An abstract not exceeding 300 words is required. Six key words should also be included. Where appropriate, these should include: one for locality, one for topic, one for method and three others. Further guidance on optimising titles and abstracts for search engines is available here.
Commentaries: Transactions invites commentaries of 1000-2000 words on papers published in the journal. These will be subject to editorial review and their publication cannot be guaranteed. Authors of the original paper will be invited to write a reply to a commentary accepted for publication.
3. Paper submission guidance
How to submit a paper
Papers should be submitted online as a Word or RTF document to Transactions using ScholarOne Manuscripts. Manuscripts should normally be double-spaced, use 12 point fonts and wide margins. Submissions should be anonymised for peer review and be set out in conformity with the information outlined below. Those that do not may be returned to the author at the initial pre-screening stage. The title of the paper, name(s), main professional/academic affiliation(s) and full address(es),including email, of the author(s) should appear in a separate Word or RTF document, as the review process is double blind and papers are submitted anonymously to reviewers.
Only the first letter and proper names are capitalized. A maximum of three levels may be used:
A This is a first-level heading
First-level headings are flush left on a separate line.
The first text line following is flush left.
B This is a second-level heading
Second-level headings are flush left on a separate line.
The first text line following is flush left.
C This is a third-level heading Third-level headings are flush left. The text follows on the same line.
These should be submitted, wherever possible, as separate eps or 300 dpi tiff files via ScholarOne Manuscripts. Heavy lines in line art should be saved as pure black; only common fonts should be used in illustrations. All scale lines should be labelled in km, and all maps should feature a North arrow. If images are provided in colour, these will be used in the online version of the published paper. Those figures requiring colour in order to be legible will also be printed in colour but all others will be rendered into black and white. All possible effort must be made to ensure that these figures can be rendered into greyscale for print. Captions must be typed on a separate sheet. Figures and photographs should be numbered separately using consecutive Arabic numerals (Figure 4 etc). All should be referred to as `Figures'.
Tables must be typed using few horizontal and no vertical rules. They are numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals (Table 2, etc). Titles should be concise, but as informative as possible. The approximate position of Tables and Figures in the text should be marked in the typescript.
Equations should be numbered consecutively with bracketed Arabic numerals in the right-hand margin. Authors must provide instructions in the margin for any special typeface required (e.g. bold, italic, Greek, etc). Careful attention must be paid to sub- and superscript symbols, and upper and lower case letters.
Measurements must be given in SI metric system. In exceptional historical cases, English equivalents may be used. Numerals should be used in the text for all numbers above ten and those relating to abbreviated units of measurement (e.g. 19 km). Words should be used for numbers from one to ten.
Informational Notes must be restricted to the minimum; usually the material can be incorporated into the text. Endnotes should be used as appropriate.
Supplementary Electronic Material that can be published as part of the online version of a paper is welcomed. Supplementary material must be important, ancillary information that is relevant to the parent article but does not or cannot appear in the printed edition of the journal. Authors must use the Harvard system, in which authors names (no initials) and dates are given in the main body of the text, with specific pages indicated if required (McFarlane 2010, 29). Multiple citations should be separated by a semicolon and listed alphabetically. References are listed alphabetically at the end of the paper under the heading References, and set out as follows:

Where there is doubt (e.g. Occasional papers), include all bibliographical details – a reference should give a reader sufficient information to allow them to locate the resource exactly and unambiguously. The place of publication and publisher's name should always be given when books are referred to.

4. Research and publication ethics
Transactions expects all submitting authors to ensure that the highest ethical standards in the conduct of research are upheld. Authors should ensure that their research complies with ethical guidance issued by their institution, or funder, as well as best practice guidelines appropriate to their sub discipline. Clear statements as provided by the Economic and Social Research Council, the Natural Environment Research Council and the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Authors are expected to ensure that their submitted article is original, fully attributed and does not contain material that is untrue, inaccurate or plagiarised. Authors are responsible for ensuring that all appropriate permissions and approvals for copyrighted material have been obtained.
Transactions uses iThenticate software to support in the identification of plagiarism and self-plagiarism. Failure to comply with the above standards will be treated very seriously. The Editorial team reserve the right to inform an author’s institution in the event of a confirmed breach.
Please note that on acceptance, authors will be obliged to sign a legally binding form confirming that the above standards have been met which will make them personally liable for any breaches for which civil or criminal charges can be brought. If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services where, via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS), they will be able to complete the licence agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. Transactions is included in Wiley's EarlyView service. EarlyView articles are complete full-text articles published online in advance of their publication in a printed issue. EarlyView articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors' final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made after online publication. The nature of EarlyView articles means that they do not yet have volume, issue or page numbers, so EarlyView articles cannot be cited in the traditional way. They are therefore given a Digital Object Identifier (DOI), which allows the article to be cited and tracked before it is allocated to an issue. After print publication, the DOI remains valid and can continue to be used to cite and access the article.
