40th Anniversary Virtual Issue

The European Journal of Political Research (EJPR) turns 40! For four decades this journal has been the flagship journal of the European Consortium for Political Research and a world-class political science outlet. Its editorial board includes some of the most active researchers in a wide range of fields of political science and international relations, across countries and continents. We think this anniversary is a great opportunity to consider the development of political science in Europe, and beyond. To this end, we asked the editorial board to nominate those articles that made, in their view, a significant contribution to our discipline. We nominated one article from each decade except from 1973-1982 where two widely cited articles received many nominations, which is why this decade is represented twice.Furthermore, we nominated two pieces on top, making a total of seven EJPR articles which are reprinted in this special issue. Nominated articles come together with a critical appraisal by an EJPR editorial board member and, whenever possible, a response by the original authors. The contents of this special issue were presented first at the ECPR General Conference, held in Bordeaux in September 2013, in a panel dedicated to the EJPR 40th anniversary. Several EJPR board members and authors of nominated articles joined the panel and contributed to an exciting discussion. We wish to thank all panel participants for their stimulating input and all commentators and nominees for their contributions to this special issue.
