It is a great pleasure to introduce this virtual edition of Entomological Science on the biology of parasitoid wasps. This is truly an enigmatic and fascinating group at many levels. Parasitic Hymenoptera are one of the largest groups of organisms on the planet, and yet most people are unaware of their existence. They are a powerful force in natural and agricultural ecosystems, and play a keystone role in ecosystem maintenance by controlling population levels of numerous other insects. Yet what I find most captivating about them is the amazing variety of behaviours and biology.
Anyone with more than a passing interest in evolutionary biology must be intrigued by the parasitoid wasps. The range of strategies for capitalising on host biology and overcoming host defences, while at the same time protecting themselves from parasitism or predation by other insects, is nothing less than astounding.
The selection of papers presented in this special virtual edition have appeared in Entomological Science over the last several years and will present a wide range of this intricate biology as well as ample evidence of the critical value of parasitoid wasps in natural and agricultural ecosystems.
I hope that readers will enjoy this presentation of papers, and perhaps be moved to a desire for the study of these remarkable creatures.
