Author Guidelines


The following types of articles are suitable for publication in DSJIE:

Teaching Briefs
Teaching briefs describe classroom innovations used to teach specific concepts or problems. They provide information on existing approaches to teaching the concept or problem, but focus on describing the innovation in sufficient detail to allow it to be replicated in the reader's classroom. They also offer evidence of the effectiveness of the innovation and its impact on student learning.

Conceptual/Theoretical Articles
Conceptual/theoretical articles examine contemporary or emerging issues, or propose new approaches in areas including, but not limited to, pedagogy, delivery, and assessment. They are grounded in theory from both the domain of study and supporting areas such as education, learning, and psychology, as well as in the literature specific to the issue being described. Conceptual/theoretical articles present significant new insights into educational practice, make compelling arguments in favor of new methods, and/or stimulate future research.

Empirical Research Articles
Empirical research articles provide empirically based insights based on the application of the decision sciences. They are grounded in the literature, have a sound theoretical foundation, apply appropriate and rigorous methodology, and offer findings that make a new and significant contribution to the literature. Empirical articles provide an objective basis for supporting or challenging the status quo, or for proposing new educational approaches.

Note: The Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education does not publish case studies designed for classroom use.

Manuscript Policies
While DSJIE may consider exceptions, research articles should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages including references, appendices, tables, and figures. Teaching Briefs will in general be shorter in length. Detailed guidelines on manuscript preparation can be found at www.dsjie.org. Since the publisher requires the submission of accepted manuscripts as word processed documents using MS Word or TeX/LateX, authors are strongly encouraged to use one of these two word processing programs. All submissions are to be made electronically at mc.manuscriptcentral.com/dsjie. At the time of submission, authors are required to certify that
(a) their manuscript has not been previously submitted to DSJIE for review,
(b) the manuscript is not currently under review by another journal nor will be submitted for review by another journal while under review at DSJIE,
(c) none of the contents of the manuscript have been copyrighted, published, or accepted for publication by another journal,
(d) appropriate citations and/or attributions for the work of others have been given, and
(e) all working papers, prior drafts, and/or final versions of submitted manuscripts that are posted on Web sites will be taken down during the review process.

Work that has been previously presented at conferences and/or published in conference proceedings may still be submitted to DSJIE. However, the work submitted should be substantively different and make a new contribution.

Review Process
While the primary goal of DSJIE is to publish high quality articles, it also strives to provide timely and constructive feedback for authors. Each manuscript submitted to DSJIE will be initially screened by the Editor to determine its suitability for the Journal, and whether it has the potential to make a significant contribution. Articles that meet these criteria are then assigned to an Associate Editor (AE) based on their functional and methodological content. The AE will assign the manuscript to at least two reviewers using a double-blind process; neither the authors nor reviewers will know the identities of each other, nor will the authors know the identity of the AE. The AE will provide an independent assessment of the manuscript and/or summarize the findings of the reviewers. Based on the feedback from all reviews, the AE will make a recommendation to the Editor whether to accept the manuscript, reject it, or request revisions. Based on the reviewers’ and AE’s comments, the editor will make a final decision. Authors should expect to hear back from the editor within three months of making their submission. Revisions will in general be processed by the same AE and reviewers that processed an original submission.
