The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice.

The CEC's specialized divisions provide additional focus and depth of information to a particular exceptionality or interest area in special education. The CEC's Division for Learning Disabilities (DLD) promotes improved services, research, and legislation for individuals with learning disabilities. Members receive Learning Disabilities Research & Practice (4 issues per year), the DLD Times newsletter (3 issues per year), and Current Practice Alerts (3 issues per year).

The mission of the Division for Learning Disabilities of the Council for Exceptional Children (DLD/CEC) is to improve the education and life success of individuals with learning disabilities. As an international professional organization, DLD:

  • Advocates on behalf of individuals with learning disabilities

  • Promotes best educational practices

  • Promotes forums for discussion of related issues

  • Provides professional development for those concerned with the education of individuals with learning disabilities

  • Recommends professional standards

  • Encourages interdisciplinary interaction
