Gerontologic Nursing in the 21st Century,

Published: 12 Mar 2010

Edited By: Liz Capezuti and Heather M. Young

Around the world, demographic trends show that the people of the world are living longer. There is a global population shift so that countries have fewer young citizens in comparison to a larger older population. While it is certainly wonderful that people are living longer we also want the elderly to live better. With aging populations the importance of managing chronic diseases has escalated and nurses are questioning how best to provide care.

The gerontologic series that will run in the Journal of Nursing Scholarship in 2010 is presenting issues that we all will face on how to provide the best care to our increasingly elderly fellow citizens. There are not enough nurses anywhere in the world to have solely "geriatric care nurses" and so this series will provide timely information on the state of geriatric nursing that will help all of us around the world as we incorporate knowledge of geriatric care into our clinical practice.

This series has now been collected together as a virtual issue.
