MOTHERING AS EVERYDAY PRACTICE

This special issue of Ethos began in conversations between editors, between Kathleen Barlow and Bambi Chapin, who were puzzled by how the seemingly contradictory, even ad hoc welter of mother–child interactions embedded in larger agendas of family, community, and large-scale cultural events and processes could produce highly enculturated adults confidentin a shared world view. Their experiences not only pointed out the vastly different understandings of ‘‘good mothering’’ people might hold but also made them acutely aware that their own mothering emerges as they juggle competing roles and agendas, mothering our own children in the midst of other work and relationships.
