Society Information

The Netherlands Entomological Society (Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging, NEV) was founded in 1845 for the advancement of entomology in the Netherlands. This traditional Entomological Society with now more than 600 members, is the only organisation of its kind in the Netherlands. It seeks to stimulate cooperation between amateur and professional entomologists in the Netherlands. Apart from its scientific objectives, the NEV also contributes to wildlife conservation and assists in entomological surveys of threatened habitats in the Netherlands.

Regional branches
Five regional branches organise their own meetings and excursions, providing opportunities for the exchange of entomological information among the entomologists of a particular region.

Sections
The Section for Experimental and Applied Entomology organises an annual meeting for professional entomologists in the Netherlands. The Proceedings of these meetings are published as the Proceedings of the Experimental and Applied Entomology Section of the Netherlands Entomological Society. The 12th volume was published in 2002.
Other sections deal with the entomofauna of the Netherlands, e.g., for the study of Microlepidoptera, Macrolepidoptera, Coleoptera, Diptera, Ants, and Hymenoptera in general.

Library
The NEV has one of the most comprehensive entomological libraries in Europe: about 2.2 km of bookshelves with 21,000 books, 4400 journals and 100,000 reprints. The library is housed in the department of entomology of the Zoological Museum of the University of Amsterdam.

Publications
Members of the NEV receive the bi-monthly journal Entomologische Berichten. The journal publishes short articles on all aspects of entomology with particular reference to the Dutch situation. About half of the articles are published in English. The journal Tijdschrift voor Entomologie contains papers on taxonomic and zoogeographical entomology. The international journal Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata publishes articles dealing with experimental and applied entomology.
