ACUTE TRYPTOPHAN DEPLETION IN TRANSLATIONAL PSYCHIATRIC RESEARCH
The special issue devoted to the acute tryptophan depletion (ATD) technique in Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica captures newly performed research on this established neurodietary method to lower the synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) in the brain for a short time. The outlined issue comprises recent work carried out in rodents and humans thus outlining a truly translational research approach with regard to central nervous serotonin function in different species. FOOD FOR THOUGHT
The topic of diet and mood disorders evokes bipolar responses – with individuals either viewing the field as flaky and devoid of data or believing in dietary nuances passionately. Much of the literature is lacking in scientific rigor and it becomes difficult to separate the ‘wheat from the chaff’. In this ‘Food for Thought’ series, we seek to establish the scientific basis for any ‘good mood food’ stuffs. For each of the three topics so-far addressed – omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin D and amino acids – there are some supportive (but little definitive) data. In essence, this series is best viewed as an appetizer. Gordon Parker

AS I REMEMBER IT
In February 2009 Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica introduced a new series of editorials under the working title of “As I Remember It”, in which eminent psychiatrists reflect on their careers and the issues that have been important to them.
