EU eeliad: Anguillid eels – conserving a global fishery

Anguillid eel - Photo credit: PmxThe sustainability of anguillid eel populations around the globe is threatened by sustained consumer demand, especially if some of the fishing pressure on declining temperate species is transferred to tropical species. However, there are gaps in our knowledge of eel biology and assessment that are hindering eel and habitat management programmes. This special issue contains 10 papers on talks presented at the “EU eeliad: Anguillid eels – conserving a global fishery” theme session of the sixth World Fisheries Congress, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, covering a broad range of scientific challenges to the biology, conservation and management of anguillid eels.
