SPECIAL INTRODUCTION BY ANDREW SCHEPARD

I am pleased to present the first virtual issue of Family Court Review (FCR) which compiles into one source the articles on the Family Law Education Reform Project (FLER) that FCR has published in recent years. These articles both define the challenges facing family law education and provide concrete examples of innovation. I hope you will find them useful in your teaching and scholarship.

A brief bit of background on FLER for those of you not already familiar with it. The Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), the Center for Children, Families and the Law at Hofstra Law School and William Mitchell Law School launched FLER to systematically address the gap between the teaching and practice of modern family law. FLER surveyed the opinions of stakeholders in the family law system - law professors, law students, judges, lawyers, mediators, social workers and psychologists about the competencies needed for effective family law practice. This represented the first critical interdisciplinary outside look at the family law curriculum ever undertaken. FLER also comprehensively surveyed family law curriculum materials to see how they matched the competencies identified by our constituencies. The result was a 2006 report endorsed by the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, the ABA Section of Dispute Resolution, the National Association of Counsel for Children and, the Association for Conflict Resolution and included in this virtual issue. Follow-up FLER activities included a conference at William Mitchell, the creation of a website (http://www.flerproject.org), and a second issue of FCR on the subject, guest edited by Professor Barbara Glesner Fines of UMKC Law School.

How can you continue this conversation? First, contribute your teaching materials (syllabi, lessons, simulations, etc.) to the FLER website (http://www.flerproject.org). Second, submit articles to the Family Court Review -- FCR’s Guidelines for Prospective Authors can be accessed at http://law.hofstra.edu/Academics/Journals/FCR/fcr_submission_guidelines.html. And third, share this free access page with students and colleagues who might be interested in this subject matter.
