About the Editor

GROUNDWATER Thomson

Neil R. Thomson, Ph.D. is the editor for the National Ground Water Association journal, Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation® (GWMR).

Thomson is a professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He has more than 25 years of research experience and expertise in the use of field investigations, laboratory experiments, and numerical models to explore subsurface contaminant fate and remediation issues. He has developed and applied a variety of research-oriented mathematical models to simulate flow and transport in the unsaturated zone, multiphase flow and multi-component transport in porous and fractured media, soil vacuum extraction, in situ air sparging, in situ chemical oxidation, and three-dimensional fluid flow and solute transport in rock fractures.

Recent field investigations involve the pilot-scale performance investigations of novel remedial technologies, and the development of economical aquifer assessment techniques (dipole and push pull tests) to support remedial design. He has been working in the area of chemical oxidation since the 1990s and has contributed to the basic understanding of the interaction of oxidants with aquifer solids, and the treatment performance expectations of chlorinated solvents and petroleum hydrocarbons.

Thomson is a licensed professional engineer who also serves as a technical expert to private industry and regulators, and is a featured lecturer in short courses in North America and the United Kingdom.
