Virtual Issue: Between the Social and the Political - Interstitial Theorizing of the International

This virtual issue explores theorizing the international and contemporary stakes in world politics at the interstices between the social and political. Interstitial theorizing brings the social and political in close proximity and intense relationality but with crevices, gaps, hiatuses, and intervals. It prevents the relation to be simply enacted as either mere difference or as a synthetic whole. Interstitial theorizing renders the familiar unfamiliar by relating knowledges that are both disjunctive and mutually reinforcing. The selection of articles combines sociology of the discipline, crossing overs into development, criminology, and law, and discussions of social theorists relatively unfamiliar to IR. Working between the social, political and international and between IR theory and social theory the articles represent a defining interest of IPS in moving our understanding of the international out of the comfort zone of familiar approaches.
