From January 2013 Microbial Biotechnology joins the Wiley Open Access publishing program of fully open access journals published by Wiley. All newly published articles in the journal will be open access under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits use, distribution and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited and is not used for commercial purposes.

Microbial Biotechnology is a fully peer reviewed open access journal. Published jointly with the Society for Applied Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology covers areas of research including: Biotechnologies related to chemicals; Pharmaceuticals; Energy; Mining; Materials; Agriculture; Food; and Environmental Protection.
