Laser-Based Analyses for Geochemistry and Geochronology
This thematic collection of papers arose from an initiative taken by the Journal to highlight current research trends involving laser-based analytical techniques. Multi-collector laser ablation ICP-MS, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and LIMS techniques are covered, with several papers detailing comparative studies with nanosecond lasers, solution nebulisation ICP-MS and SIMS. Notably, there are three papers that concentrate on different aspects of the application of femtosecond lasers. Applications to geochronology and geochemistry are prominent, focussing on U-Pb dating of both Archaean and exceptionally young (1 Ma) zircon grains, as well as in situ K-Ar dating of extra-terrestrial whole rock material in the context of planetary robotic missions.
Geological Glass Reference Material
This thematic issue covers research articles dealing with geological glass reference materials published in the journal, most notably the NIST SRM 610-617 series, but also including the MPI-DING series, USGS glass RMs, the Chinese CGSG series, and a number of others.
ISO/IAG-Compliant Reference Material Characterisation
This thematic issue comprises articles dealing with the characterisation and certification of geological reference materials carried out specifically following the protocol of the International Association of Geoanalysts, and under guidelines established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Modern Analytical Metrology
The original articles in this virtual thematic issue revolve around key contributions setting out the approach recommended by the International Association of Geoanalysts (IAG) to the certification of geological and environmental reference materials based on guidelines developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
Platinum-Group Element and Noble metal
This virtual thematic issue is a collection of papers featuring research on the platinum-group elements, the noble metals and rhenium. Included articles deal with characterisation of reference materials and certified RMs for the PGE and noble metals, as well as concentration data for these element groups in a variety of samples, notably including ores and ultramafic rocks.
Sampling and Uncertainty Estimation in Geoanalysis
This collection of original articles from the Journal encompasses a variety of statistical techniques with particular relevance to its editorial aims and scope. Highlighted are uncertainty estimation at various sampling scales, the detection of analytical bias, and linear regression models in geoanalysis.
Zircon U-Pb geochronology
This thematic issue focuses predominantly on zircon reference materials for U-Pb and Pb/Pb geochronological applications. Analytical techniques include laser ablation (multicollector) ICP-MS, secondary ionisation mass spectrometry, laser fluorination, backscattered electron and cathodoluminescence imaging and electron probe microanalysis.
