Overview

Insect Conservation and Diversity explicitly associates the two concepts of insect diversity and insect conservation for the benefit of invertebrate conservation.  The journal places an emphasis on wild arthropods and specific relations between arthropod conservation and diversity.  Key topics covered in the journal will include biogeography, climate change (and its impacts on distributions and range), conservation genetics, global biodiversity, integrating conservation science and policy, and long-term planning and implementation. Insect Conservation and Diversity is particularly keen to welcome submissions that are related to the following concepts:

  • Understanding the past and present distribution of biodiversity

  • Implementing suitable monitoring systems for arthropod populations to disentangle stochastic and natural variation from that resulting from anthropogenic action

  • Identifying harmful factors influencing arthropod populations and their cascading effects on ecosystem services

  • Seeking strategies to alleviate the action of harmful factors and restoring ecosystem services

More generally, the journal is open to submissions within the area of interest of insect (and other arthropod) conservation and diversity, covering topics ranging from ecological theory to practical management.

Aims and Scope

To publish papers of the highest scientific quality within the general area of insect (and other arthropods) conservation and diversity covering topics ranging from ecological theory to practical management.

Papers are invited on the following topics:

  • Conservation genetics

  • Extinction debt

  • Long-term conservation planning and implementation

  • Global implications of local or national conservation actions

  • Management responses of species and communities

  • Captive breeding programs

  • Comparisons of restored and natural habitats

  • Biogeography

  • Global biodiversity

  • Metapopulation dynamics

  • Climate change: impacts on distributions and range

  • Invasive species: impacts and control

  • Effects of pollution

  • Genetic threats to diversity by introgression

  • Effects of fragmentation on diversity and distribution

  • Impact of agricultural and forestry practices on biodiversity

  • Enhancing urban environments for diversity and protection

  • Biodiversity action plans: can we scale up from insects?

  • Effectiveness and choice of indicator species

  • Soil biodiversity and interactions with above-ground biodiversity

  • Ecological interactions at local levels

  • Ecological and evolutionary factors influencing diversity and local, regional and global scales

  • Sustainable livelihoods and training on the ground

  • Integrating science and policy

Contributions will fall into five main areas:

Standard research papers
Major/Feature/Invited reviews
Mini-Reviews
Techniques/Methodologies
Debate/Conjecture/Forum/Policy/Perspectives

Contributions are welcomed from all sectors of the ecological and conservation community with a particular interest in arthropods.  Descriptions of new species, straightforward accounts of natural history and articles of an anecdotal nature will not be published.
