Diabetes has been known since antiquity, with treatment approaches based to a large degree, although not entirely, on dietary manipulations. Another thread of traditional treatment has been the use of herbal medications, and it is likely that some such approaches will prove their efficacy with appropriate study. The challenge has been to understand the mechanisms by which these varied substances exert benefit and, if possible, to develop more effective treatment approaches based on careful evaluation of the actual effects in man and in experimental animal models of vitamins, herbs, supplements and traditional medications for diabetes. One of the lovely features of having an online presence is our ability to reorganize content in a variety of ways. We present for our readers' perusal our first "virtual issue," in which we collect a number of publications relevant to this topic of traditional medications for diabetes that appeared during the first four years of publication of the Journal of Diabetes.
