APLAR was established in 1963 under the original title of 'The South East Asia and Pacific League Against Rheumatism (SEAPAL)'.  Its aim is to stimulate and promote awareness and knowledge of rheumatic diseases as well as the means of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and relief of symptoms.

APLAR works through the Standing Committees on Epidemiology, Education and Publications, International Clinical Studies and Drug Control, International and National Social and Community Agencies, and Paediatrics.  There are also several subcommittees and special interest groups.
