Yin LiHighlight from Prof. Yin Li, Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, editorial board member of Biotechnology Journal (E-mail: yli@im.ac.cn): Jointly organized by the Key Laboratory of Microbial Systems Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation, the Netherlands, the Symposium on Systems and Synthetic Biology of Industrial Microorganisms was successfully held in Suzhou, China, on 6th July, under the framework of the 31st IUBS. Fourteen experts from the Netherlands, Germany and China presented the state-of-the-art understanding and engineering of a variety of industrial or model microorganisms including Aspergillus niger, Neurospora crassa, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida, Clostridium acetobutylicum, and Lactobacillus plantarum. Hot topics in the area of industrial biotechnology, including biomass degradation, utilization of biomass inhibitors, pentose catabolism, transport of disaccharide, and production of important bio-based products (ethanol, butanol, avermectin, erythromycin, and polyhydroxyalkanoates) were thoroughly discussed. Moreover, development of genome-scale metabolic models, 13C-based intracellular flux analysis as well as genetic regulation circuits were also discussed. Biotechnology Journal will assemble all the stories presented at this symposium into a special issue “systems and synthetic approaches to industrial biotechnology” to be published in 2013, with the aim to let a broad readership to learn the highlights of this symposium.
