Impact No.19: Patriotism in Schools
by Michael Hand

Is 'love of country' a defensible aim of education? Is it right for politicians to charge schools with delivering a patriotic citizenry?
Remarking on the curious lack of engagement between defenders and opponents of patriotic education, Hand argues that the explicit teaching of patriotism in schools cannot be defended on rational grounds - and so should not be actively promoted but rather taught as a controversial issue in the curriculum.
Treating patriotism as a form of emotional education, he argues that while the rational cultivation of the emotions is a proper province of school education, teaching love of country is a controversial matter, which should only be taught as such. Schools should not promote patriotism unless it can be unequivocally shown to be worthwhile.

Societies

AESA

The American Educational Studies Association (AESA) was established in 1968 as an international learned society for students, teachers, research scholars, and administrators who are interested in the foundations of education. AESA is a society primarily comprised of college and university professors who teach and research in the field of education utilizing one or more of the liberal arts disciplines of philosophy, history, politics, sociology, anthropology, or economics as well as comparative/international and cultural studies. The purpose of social foundations study is to bring intellectual resources derived from these areas to bear in developing interpretive, normative, and critical perspectives on education, both inside of and outside of schools. The AESA sponsors the journal Educational Theory.

The John Dewey Society

Founded in 1935, the John Dewey Society exists to keep alive John Dewey's commitment to the use of critical and reflective intelligence in the search for solutions to crucial problems in education and culture. We subscribe to no doctrine, but in the spirit of Dewey, we welcome controversy, respect dissent, and encourage the responsible discussions of issues of special concern to educators. We also promote open-minded, critical reconsiderations of Dewey's influential ideas about democracy, education, and philosophy.
The John Dewey Society sponsors the journal Educational Theory.

PES

The Philosophy of Education Society was founded to:

• promote the fundamental philosophic treatment of the problems of education
• promote the clarification of agreements and differences among the several philosophies of education through the opportunities for discussion afforded by annual meetings
• advance and improve teaching in the philosophy of education both in schools for the education of teachers and in other educational institutions
• cultivate fruitful relationships between workers in general philosophy and workers in philosophy of education
• cultivate fruitful relationships between scholars in philosophy of education and those in other areas of education, and
• encourage promising students in the field of philosophy of education.

The PES sponsors the journal Educational Theory

PESA

The Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA) organises meetings, conferences and seminars on topics of interest to philosophy of education. It funds scholarships, provides research grants, and publishes appropriate material related to philosophy of education. The Society is supported by income generated through its publications, especially the Society journal Educational Philosophy and Theory. Membership is open to those with a professional interest in the philosophy of education. There is no residential requirement and membership is international.

PESGB

The Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain (PESGB) exists to promote for the public benefit the advancement and teaching of philosophy of education. It organises conferences and seminars in the field, including the PESGB Annual Conference in Oxford, supports some 17 regional branches, administers a scheme of grants and awards for activities that further its aims, and provides for the publication of the Journal of Philosophy of Education and the IMPACT booklet series.
