Molecular Ecology Special issue Volume 20 issue 5In recent years new genetic and genomic techniques have enabled biologists to sequence whole genomes of many organisms to determine what genes they carry and their functions. By comparing genomes between organisms ecologists and evolutionary biologists have been able to use these methods to start to answer some of the most fundamental questions in ecology and evolution.

For example: How are populations of organisms evolving adaptations to rapidly changing environments? How does variation arise among populations and species? What are the mechanisms of speciation at the molecular level? What are the evolutionary causes and consequences of infectious diseases and parasites? How do embryos develop into complex organisms and how have these developmental pathways evolved? Evolutionary ecological genomics has become one of the most important and rapidly growing areas of the biological sciences and its impact on current knowledge is only set to continue.

Journals

Ecology and EvolutionNew Wiley Open Access Journal Ecology and Evolution is the peer-reviewed journal for rapid dissemination of research in all areas of ecology, evolution and conservation science. The journal gives priority to quality research reports, theoretical or empirical, that develop our understanding of organisms and their diversity, interactions between them, and the natural environment.

Ecology and Evolution

The Plant JournalThe Plant Genome: An Evolutionary View on Structure and Function

The genome sequences of more than ten plant species are already available, and the pace is greatly accelerating. But what do these sequences tell us about what makes a plant a plant? The series of articles in this special issue of The Plant Journal presents a comprehensive overview of how this wealth of information can help us understand what plant genomes consist of, how they are maintained and transmitted, what functions they specify, and how these evolved to encompass the enormous diversity we encounter nowadays in the plant kingdom.
