The Effects of Corruption on Various Forms of Political Participation in Colombia

In Latin America, corruption may not only disrupt the political scene but also drive citizens to the streets. Focusing on Colombia, this article tests hypotheses regarding the influence of corruption on different forms of political participation. The research considers elections and several other forms of political participation such as meetings and demonstrations. The study also distinguishes between perceptions of corruption and experience with corruption and their respective effects. The results support the conclusion that the perception of corruption among citizens leads to low turnout for certain types of political participation, whereas experience with corruption leads to higher participation.

El fenómeno de la corrupción en América Latina puede no solo sacudir la escena política, sino también hacer que la gente salga a la calle. En el caso de Colombia se están probando hipótesis sobre la influencia de la corrupción en diferentes formas de participación política. La investigación no se limita solo a las elecciones, sino que también tiene en cuenta la participación en otras formas de participación política, como reuniones y manifestaciones. Además, distingue entre percepción y experiencia. Las conclusiones son que la percepción de la corrupción conduce a una baja movilización en algunos tipos de participación política, mientras que la experiencia con la corrupción conduce a una mayor participación.

在拉美，腐败可能不仅会扰乱政治场景，还能驱使公民走上街头。聚焦于哥伦比亚，本文检验了几种有关腐败对不同形式的政治参与所产生的影响的假设。研究衡量了选举和几个其他形式的政治参与，例如集会与示威游行。研究还对腐败感知、腐败经历及其相应效果进行了区分。研究结论认为，公民对腐败的感知导致某些政治参与出现低投票率，而腐败经历则会引起更高程度的政治参与。
