An official journal of the Japanese Society of Pathology, Pathology International has published articles of scientific excellence in human and experimental pathology for over 70 years. We offer rapid publication and fast decision times with an average of 8 days to first decision.

Our focus is on the morphological study of the disease process and/or mechanisms, including results of ancillary methods (cellular, chemical, immunological, and molecular biological) that complement the morphology research.

Graphical Abstract

Detection of Legionella species other than Legionella pneumophila in formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue: An autopsy case study Issue ,

We experienced an autopsy case of who was discovered in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and subsequently declared deceased due to severe pneumonia. Tests using a pan bacterial/viral detection kit and qualitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for Legionella pneumophila were negative. However, using deoxyribonucleic acid extracted from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded lung tissue, PCR amplification of the ssrA gene of congeneric Legionella species yielded positive results. Histologically, slight staining was observed in the cytoplasm of macrophages in lung alveoli by Warthin-starry and Gimenez stains.
