Austral Ecology is the premier journal for fundamental and applied ecology in the Southern Hemisphere. We publish original papers describing experimental, observational or theoretical studies on terrestrial, marine or freshwater systems, which are considered without taxonomic or regional bias. We welcome ecologically relevant studies that incorporate physiological, genetics, life-history, and behavioural perspectives for organismal studies through to community and biogeochemical studies when addressing ecosystem- and landscape-scale questions.

As an official Journal of The Ecological Society of Australia (ESA), Austral Ecology addresses the commonality among ecosystems across the globe, with a special focus on ecosystems in the southern hemisphere.

Special Issue: Ecology in South America

South American ecological science has grown immensely in the past few decades, with flourishing graduate courses across the continent dedicated to the topic and an increasing number of researchers focused on understanding many aspects of the continent's immense biodiversity. Austral Ecology and the Ecological Society of Australia, with their aim to publish innovative research to encourage the sharing of information and experiences that enrich the understanding of the ecology of the Southern Hemisphere, are releasing here the special issue "Ecology in South America: Present state and future prospects." Read the special issue here.

Austral Ecology Accepts Translated Abstracts

Austral Ecology is pleased to incorporate abstracts in other languages and authors are invited to include a version of the abstract, translated into a second language.
