The Society for the Study of Theology and the International Journal of Systematic Theology award an annual essay prize – now entering its twentieth year – in memory of Colin Gunton and, with effect from this year, John Webster. The prize for 2022 has been awarded to Abraham Wu for his essay entitled ‘The “End” of Memory: Memory, the Porous Self, and the Communion of Saints in Augustine’s Confessions’. This essay will feature in a forthcoming issue of IJST. The SST and the IJST would like to offer their congratulations to the winner, and their thanks to all who entered.

We are pleased to announce that ‘Theologies of Peace’ will be the topic for the 2023 competition. Because the prize celebrates the contributions of Gunton and Webster to constructive Christian theology, essays should function within this same broad sphere. Entry to the competition is restricted to current students and to those within three years of their doctoral graduation at the closing date. Entries will be judged on academic merit. The winner of the 2023 prize will be invited to attend the annual conference of the SST in 2024, where a presentation of the prize of £200 will be made as a part of the conference reception.
