Psychophysiology is the most established journal in the world specifically dedicated to the dissemination of psychophysiological science. It continues to play a key role in advancing human neuroscience in its many forms and methodologies.

We welcome submissions on new theoretical, empirical, and methodological advances in: cognitive, affective, clinical and social neuroscience, psychopathology and psychiatry, health science and behavioral medicine, and biomedical engineering.

Impact of behavioral inhibitory control and startle reactivity to uncertain threat on youth suicide risk

  •  10 December 2024

Abstract

The present study examined the unique and interactive effects of behavioral inhibitory control and threat reactivity on suicide risk in youth. Results reveled that greater reactivity to unpredictable threat was associated with increased suicide risk at low, but not high, levels of inhibitory control. These findings shed light on subgroups of youth who may be at elevated risk.

Ambulatory autonomic nervous system activity in relation to hearing impairment

  •  10 December 2024

Abstract

Our research challenges the notion that those with hearing impairment have altered cardiac vagal activity or skin sympathetic activity in daily life (daytime & sleep) compared to those with normal hearing. However, hearing impairment did impact cardiac sympathetic activity, leading to a larger change between daytime and sleep.

Stability of performance monitoring with prolonged task performance: A study of error‐related negativity and error positivity

  •  10 December 2024

Abstract

This preregistered study shows that ERN and Pe component amplitudes exhibit distinct patterns of change associated with prolonged task performance over a single task and task battery, with amplitudes generally decreasing. These findings, based on data from two independent multisite studies, suggest that data quality also decreases over time. The results highlight the importance of conducting performance monitoring studies early in task batteries with short tasks to mitigate the effects of prolonged task performance on ERP component amplitudes.

Paternal depressive symptoms and infant respiratory sinus arrhythmia predict empathy‐related behaviors

  •  10 December 2024

Abstract

Through the integration of psychophysiological and observational assessments, this study examined the implications of paternal postpartum depression (PPD) and infant respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) for infants' empathy-related responses. Findings unveil the intricate interplay between environmental risk and physiological functioning and highlight RSA during infancy as a potent environmental sensitivity factor.

From pupil to performance: Exploring the role of tonic norepinephrine levels in response inhibition using pretrial pupil measures

  •  10 December 2024

Abstract

Our work suggests a neuromodulatory role of (tonic) norepinephrine in regulating (proactive) response inhibition, particularly via modulating the speed of the go response (and potentially the speed of the stop response). This further establishes norepinephrine as important to inhibition, but in a global way rather than stopping-specific, opposing earlier views.
