Meet the Editor

Paul M. Salmon is a professor in Human Factors and is the director of the Centre for Human Factors and Sociotechnical Systems at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Paul has almost 20 years’ experience of applied Human Factors research in areas such as road and rail safety, aviation, defence, sport and outdoor recreation, healthcare, workplace safety, and cybersecurity. During this time he has held prestigious fellowships including an Australian National Health and Medical Research Council Post-Doctoral research fellowship and an Australian Research Council (ARC) Future Fellowship. He has also been the lead chief investigator on major programs of research worth over $10m.

His research has focused on understanding and optimizing human, team, organisational and system performance through the application of Human Factors theory and methods. Paul has co-authored 20 books, over 200 peer reviewed journal articles, and numerous book chapters and conference contributions. His current research is focused on applying Human Factors theories and methods to better understand and prevent major societal and global issues. Paul is particularly passionate about Human Factors methods and their capacity to help optimise health and wellbeing, and believes the discipline has a bigger calling in this respect.

Paul’s work has been recognized through various accolades, including the Chartered Institute for Ergonomics and Human Factor’s 2019 William Floyd award and 2008 Presidents Medal, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Australia’s 2017 Cumming memorial medal, and the International Ergonomics Association’s 2018 research impacting practice award.

Special Issue Call for Papers: Closing the gender gap in Human Factors research

Closing the gender gap in Human Factors research

The aim of this special issue is to provide researchers and practitioners with an opportunity to present their research that focuses on efforts to close the gender gap across the range of Human Factors domains (e.g., transportation, healthcare, defense, workplaces, high-hazard industries, sport, manufacturing) and discuss current and future issues. Due to the nature of this topic area we welcome both commentaries and full papers. Papers may be submitted here.

Special Issue Call for Papers: Human Factors in Healthcare

Human Factors in Healthcare

The aim of the special issue is to provide researchers and practitioners with an opportunity to present the latest applications of HFE in healthcare, including both research and practice applications. We are particularly keen to showcase the increasingly applied nature of this work and encourage submissions from both researchers and practitioners. Articles to be included in the special issue should have a strong focus on the applied nature of the work being described and the translation of HFE knowledge, theory, principles and research in practice. Papers may be submitted here.
