Oppression is as American as "Apple Pie": Learning About and Confronting Whiteness, Privilege, and Oppression
This special section situates White racial socialization (WRS) in its rightful place - in the context of White supremacy. The first article offers a conceptual framework to guide research on White adolescents’ racial identity development in this context. The second employs a critical ethnographic approach to explore White racial identity development among incarcerated White adolescents. Additional studies use qualitative, observational, and mixed methods to understand WRS practices in White families. The final article presents a conceptual model of digital WRS. Authors provide recommendations for future research, such as engaging in critical researcher self-reflexivity and focusing on content of racial socialization messages. Two commentaries highlight cross-cutting themes and urge developmental scientists to view this special section as a call to action.
Special Issue: “Truth is on the Side of the Oppressed”: Systems of Oppression Affecting BIPOC Youth
This “Truth is on the Side of the Oppressed” Special Issue features 17 papers and 3 commentaries that examine the systemic forces at the root of experiences of oppression and advance the field toward improving short and long-term developmental outcomes for BIPOC adolescents. The issue is free to read through August 2022. The special issue was edited by Linda C. Halgunseth, Dawn P. Witherspoon, and Laura Wray-Lake.
Special Issue: Black Lives Matter!: Systems of Oppression Affecting Black Youth
This Black Lives Matter! Special Issue uses diverse methods to examine how multiple systems of oppression at different levels (individual, institutional, and structural) affect Black youth. Through an intersectionality lens, scholars examine how gender, sexual orientation, skin tone, and socioeconomic status create unique experiences for Black youth. Collectively, the 17 papers address the sweeping impact of racism and other systems of oppression on Black youth by examining structural factors (e.g., policing), interpersonal experiences (e.g., teacher–student), and developmental processes (e.g., socialization). Commentaries provide a historical view and future perspective to contextualize how far we have come and how much farther we need to go in our quest to combat racism and other systems of oppression and improve the lives of Black adolescents. The special issue was edited by Dawn Witherspoon, Linda Halgunseth, Laura Wray-Lake.
Special Issue: Decade in Review
The Journal of Research on Adolescence has published a special section, A Decade Review of Adolescence Research, highlighting research conducted over the last decade. The special section features fifteen articles from experts on adolescent development on topics ranging from parenting and peers to immigrant resilience and positive youth development. The special section was edited by Noel Card, Amanda Sheffield Morris, Christina Salmivalli, and Gustavo Carlo.
Special Issue: The Impact of the COVID‐19 Pandemic on Adolescent Emotional, Social, and Academic Adjustment
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a strong impact on adolescents worldwide. This special issue aimed to increase our understanding of the factors that explain interindividual differences in how adolescents are affected by the pandemic. The special issue includes 21 empirical articles from four continents on the role of the pandemic in changes in emotional, social, and academic adjustment during adolescence. The studies demonstrate that many adolescents experienced increased depressive symptoms, negative affect, and loneliness, and lower academic adjustment during the pandemic, particularly those that were already at risk before the pandemic. At the same time, many adolescents had individual, family, and community resources that made them resilient and helped them to continue to function well despite the adverse circumstances.
