Author Guidelines

General information

The Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities (JPPID) is an international, peer-reviewed journal established by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD) to provide a forum for description of evidence-based policy and practice related to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It focuses on policy development, service design, practice, and approaches to service user empowerment which are formed by research.

  • JPPID is published in an online-only format. Print subscription and single-issue sales are available from Wiley's Print-on-Demand Partner. To order online, click through to the ordering portal from the journal's “Subscribe and Renew” page on the Wiley Online Library https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/researchers/read/access-options.
  • A subscription to the journal is included in IASSIDD individual membership. Join or renew at iassidd.org.

Wiley Special Education Publishing Network

This journal participates in the Wiley Special Education publishing network. This exciting collaboration amongst our Special Education journals simplifies and speeds up the publication process, helping authors find the right home for their research. At the Editors’ judgement, suitable papers not accepted by one journal may be recommended for referral to another journal(s) in the network. Authors decide whether to accept the referral, with the option to transfer their paper with or without revisions. Once the referral is accepted, submission happens automatically, along with any previous reviewer reports, thereby relieving pressure on the peer review process.  While a transfer does not guarantee acceptance, it is more likely to lead to a successful outcome for authors by helping them to find a route to publication quickly and easily.

Accepted manuscripts

Manuscripts that report research, analyses, reviews, theoretical constructs, and other work exploring both tested ideas in policy and practice and possible future directions are welcome. The Journal also welcomes brief reports of practice experiences documented by evidence-based research or data-based outcomes. In addition, briefs or abstracts that translate and comment on work previously published in non-English journals are welcome.

Submissions are welcome from anywhere in the world, but the content must be sufficiently general to apply to other national environments. Policy and practice analyses should provide a framework for ideas and information that can readily translate into situations other than the author's own country. The methodology section must contain sufficient detail on the location of the study and the participant pool to permit understanding of the context for the study or paper. It is recommended that the author’s country not be included in the title of the manuscript.

Manuscript format

Free Format submission

Journal of Policy and Practice in Intellectual Disabilities now offers Free Format submission for a simplified and streamlined submission process. Before you submit, you will need:

  • Your manuscript: this should be an editable file including text, figures, and tables, or separate files – whichever you prefer. All required sections should be contained in your manuscript, including abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions. Figures and tables should have legends. Figures should be uploaded in the highest resolution possible. References may be submitted in any style or format, as long as it is consistent throughout the manuscript. Supporting information should be submitted in separate files. If the manuscript, figures or tables are difficult for you to read, they will also be difficult for the editors and reviewers, and the editorial office will send it back to you for revision. Your manuscript may also be sent back to you for revision if the quality of English language is poor.
  • An ORCID ID, freely available at https://orcid.org. (Why is this important? Your article, if accepted and published, will be attached to your ORCID profile. Institutions and funders are increasingly requiring authors to have ORCID IDs.)
  • The title page of the manuscript, including:
    • Your co-author details, including affiliation and email address. (Why is this important? We need to keep all co-authors informed of the outcome of the peer review process.)
    • Statements relating to our ethics and integrity policies, which may include any of the following (Why are these important? We need to uphold rigorous ethical standards for the research we consider for publication):
      • data availability statement
      • funding statement
      • conflict of interest disclosure
      • ethics approval statement
      • patient consent statement
      • permission to reproduce material from other sources
      • clinical trial registration

Important: the journal operates a double-blind peer review policy. Please anonymise your manuscript and supply a separate title page file.

To submit, login at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jppid and create a new submission. Follow the submission steps as required and submit the manuscript.

General requirements

Ethical Guidelines: You will be prompted to confirm that all the research meets ethical guidelines and legal requirements. Where appropriate, as an acknowledgement in your manuscript, specify the body that has approved the conduct of the research and state the approval number. If your country does not have research ethics bodies, include a statement affirming that the research team has taken appropriate steps with regard to access, informed consent, confidentiality and anonymity. Acceptance of papers is based on the understanding that authors have treated research participants with respect and dignity throughout.

Author contribution: On the title page, describe the roles of all authors in preparation of the manuscript (e.g., principal investigator, contributing writer, project team member manuscript reviewer, etc.). All authors listed must have contributed to the writing and pre-submission development of the manuscript. Contributors to the article other than the authors accredited should be listed under acknowledgments.

Conflict of interest: On submission, you will be asked to provide details of any potential conflict of interests.

Check list: On submission, you will be asked to confirm details of your manuscript. These include that your manuscript has not been published previously, or is not under submission to another publication. Please consult the latest version of the American Psychological Association's publication manual with respect to confidentiality protections, assurances of consent, author roles and responsibilities, and avoidance of self-plagiarism.

You will also be asked to select the IASSIDD Special Interest Research Group that would be relevant to your manuscript.

Referencing, units and language

  • JPPID uses APA 7th format for intext citation and reference lists. Strict adherence to format is required and the use of bibliographic software is strongly encouraged.
  • Units of measure must be SI units.
  • Decimal points in numbers are to be indicated using ".” , not commas.
  • JPPID is published in English and spelling, technical terms, and symbols should conform to The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Current English.
  • Careful attention to the use of language in descriptions of participants is essential. ‘Person first’ language is required e.g. ‘a person with a disability’ NOT ‘a disabled person’, unless explicit explanation is provided in the text and the explanation meets the approval of the editors.

Authors who write in English as a second or other language are encouraged to contribute to JPPID.

Pre-acceptance English-language editing

Authors for whom English is a second language may choose to have their manuscripts professionally edited before submission or during the review process. Authors wishing to pursue a professional English-language editing service should make contact and arrange payment with the editing service of their choice. For more details regarding the recommended services, please refer to http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/english_language.asp.

Submission and Review

JPPID uses a Web-based submission and peer-review system called ScholarOne. All manuscripts should be submitted at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jppid. Full help and instructions are provided online. Please note that JPPID employs a plagiarism detection system. By submitting your manuscript to this journal, you accept that your manuscript may be screened for plagiarism against previously published works.

All papers and reports are refereed using a ‘blind’ peer-review process.

Two documents are required for submission.

  1. Title page.

A title page containing author details is to be provided in a separate document from the manuscript. Include the following sections:

  • Title
  • Short running title
  • Author list. This list should consist of the full names (first and last) of all authors, their affiliations or place of work, and the location (city/town and country) of their affiliation as well as their contribution to the manuscript (see General Requirements)
  • Corresponding author contact information: postal address, telephone numbers, and email.
  • Conflict of interest disclosure statement
  • Ethical conduct statement
  1. Manuscript main document.

Authors must ensure they have not disclosed their identity in the manuscript. References to previously published work by the authors should be designated ‘Author, date’ in text and the citation omitted from the reference list. Extensive self-citation is not encouraged and authors must take care to ensure reviewers will have sufficient information about the study in the absence of these references to understand the research.

Include the following sections:

  • Title – ensure this is a succinct description of the work. This aids citation. Avoid including a specific country in the title as this limits interest for an international readership.
  • Short running title
  • Abstract – Up to 300 words. Ensure this is an accurate summary of the paper. The abstract should outline the issues or questions investigated, essential findings, and main conclusions of the paper. References and abbreviations should not be included in the abstract.
  • Keywords – Include up to six. One of these MUST be ‘Intellectual Disability’. Another should be either ‘Policy’ or ‘Practice’. Choose keywords that would assist search engines to locate your paper.
  • Main document
  • Figures and Tables – be sure to place all tables and figures after the references; do not embed them in the text. Instead, insert a place marker indicating the placement within the text of the table or figure (e.g., "Insert Table 1 about here").
  • Illustrations

There are three preferred formats for digital artwork submission: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Portable Document Format (PDF), and Tagged Image Format (TIFF). We suggest that line art be saved as EPS files. Alternately, these may be saved as PDF files at 600 dots per inch (dpi) or better at final size. Tone art, or photographic images, should be saved as TIFF files with a resolution of 300 dpi at final size. For combination figures, or artwork that contains both photographs and labeling, we recommend saving figures as EPS files or as PDF files with a resolution of 600 dpi or better at final size. More detailed information on the submission of electronic artwork can be found at http://authorservices.wiley.com/bauthor/illustration.asp.
