Factors that influence general practitioners' obesity-related clinical practices and determinants of behavior to target to promote best practice in obesity care: A qualitative exploration
- First Published: 28 September 2024
A qualitative study explored general practitioners' (GPs') influences on obesity management practices and identified potential targets for intervention. The Theoretical Domains Framework and Behavior Change Wheel informed the analysis, highlighting the influence of multiple factors on current practices. The findings suggest that future interventions should target GPs' knowledge and skills and the broader clinical environment to promote best practices in obesity management. Collaborative development of interventions with GPs is recommended to ensure optimal impact.

Impact of diet adherence on weight and lipids among African American participants randomized to vegan or omnivorous diets
- First Published: 27 September 2024
Participants (all African American adults with overweight or obesity) in the NEW Soul study who were adherent to the vegan diet to which they were randomized lost more weight than all other participants (less adherent vegans, adherent omnivores, and less adherent omnivores) at 6- and 24 months. Adherent vegans had a greater improvement in cholesterol-to-HDL ratio than all other participants at 24 months and greater reductions in insulin at 6 months.

Stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs about obesity among dental team members
- First Published: 29 August 2024
This cross-sectional survey aimed to assess stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs of dental professionals (registered general dentists, oral health therapists) and support staff (dental assistants, dental receptionists) working in private and public regional practices in New South Wales and specialists in Special Needs Dentistry across Australia toward people living with obesity. Survey responses reflected evidence of weight stigma in both dental professionals and support staff. Professional development targeting weight stigma reduction in the dental setting is needed for both clinicians and support staff.

Assessment of clinician agreement with and knowledge of evidence-based obesity treatment in the primary care setting
- First Published: 01 October 2024
Given that guideline-directed obesity treatment is imperative in the primary care setting, this multimethod study aimed to assess its presence via a prospective clinician survey and retrospective patient data analysis. Twenty seven primary care clinicians completed the survey, reporting general agreement with guideline-directed obesity treatment and demonstrating gaps in knowledge of evidence-based practices. >2900 baseline and follow-up patient care encounters were analyzed, revealing a lack of positive clinical outcomes and appropriate anti-obesity medication prescribing patterns.
